It’s never too late to invest in a healthy, straight smile. 1 in 5 orthodontic patients are over the age of 18, thanks to less noticeable treatments, like Invisalign. Clear aligners are worn over your teeth to move them gradually. You won’t have to worry about the appearance of brackets and wires. However, your aligners can lose their transparency if you aren’t careful, like drinking coffee. If you can’t skip your morning cup of coffee, here’s what you need to know to protect your investment.
Can I Drink Coffee with Invisalign?
It’s entirely possible to drink coffee with veneers, but your dentist will advise against it. Although you won’t have any dietary restrictions, you shouldn’t have anything except water while wearing Invisalign. While your aligners are made of durable plastic, they can break if you try to chew with them. Not to mention, other concerns that can add complications to your treatment plan, including:
- Stains and Discoloration
Eating or drinking anything except water can stain your aligners, causing them to be visible on your teeth. In addition, your teeth can be more vulnerable to discoloration because coffee can get trapped between your aligners and enamel.
- Cavities
Although coffee is a great way to jumpstart your day, it is acidic, especially if you add sugar or cream. Drinking coffee without removing your aligners can increase your risk of tooth decay because cavity-causing bacteria will be trapped against your teeth.
- Aligner Damage
Clear aligners are made of heat-sensitive “thermoplastics.” Exposing them to heat can cause them to warp or become damaged. A small sip of hot coffee can lead to a delay in your treatment plan.
If you just can’t resist an energy-boosting cup of coffee, your dentist will recommend a few precautions to ensure your caffeine craving doesn’t compromise your orthodontic journey.
Drinking Coffee with Invisalign
You can ensure coffee doesn’t leave a lasting mark on your smile by making a few adjustments:
- Remove Your Aligners: Take your aligners out and place them in their storage case before taking your first sip.
- Drink Your Coffee Quickly: It’s best to drink your coffee in 15 to 30 minutes instead of sipping it throughout the day. The sooner you can put your aligners back in, the better.
- Reduce Sugar and Cream: Decrease the amount of cream and sugar you add to your coffee to help combat bacteria growth that can lead to decay.
- Brush or Rinse: Brush your teeth after you’ve finished your cup. Rinse your mouth with water if you can’t get to your toothbrush. Don’t forget to put your aligners back in to ensure you’re wearing them enough.
You can enjoy your favorite beverage without it affecting your Invisalign, giving you one more reason to smile.
