Is This a Dental Emergency?
It’s important to know what constitutes a dental emergency and to understand how to deal with circumstances quickly and calmly. The following is a list of the most common dental emergency situations and some first-aid information to keep in mind:
- Avulsed (knocked out) tooth: Retrieve the tooth carefully, holding it only by the crown (the portion that is normally visible when you smile). Rinse the tooth gently with warm water, but do not attempt to remove any attached tissue. If possible, place the tooth back into its socket, making sure that it is facing the right way. If this is not feasible, place the tooth in a small container or baggy of milk and contact our office right away. Time is of the essence in this situation; the sooner you see Dr. Holcomb, the higher the likelihood that the tooth can be saved.
- Soft tissue injuries: Rinse your mouth with warm water mixed with a small amount of salt. Using a moist bit of gauze or a teabag, apply pressure to the area for 15 to 20 minutes. A cold compress may be used on the outside of the mouth to alleviate pain. If bleeding does not subside, see Dr. Holcomb right away.
- Severe toothache: First, gently floss around the affected tooth to ensure that there is nothing stuck between it and the adjacent tooth. An over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medicine like ibuprofen may be taken to diminish the pain. Never place aspirin against the tooth or the gums, as this can damage the tissue. Contact our office as soon as possible to schedule an appointment.
- Lost crown: If possible, retrieve the crown and call our office as soon as possible to schedule your appointment with Dr. Holcomb. Using a small bit of toothpaste, over-the-counter dental cement, or denture adhesive, carefully attempt to replace the crown in its proper position. Never use any type of glue.
